CHART Art Fair
This year's edition of CHART offers more than a hundred artists and 37 Nordic and international galleries participating in the art fair at Charlottenborg in the heart of Copenhagen. What they have in common is that they share an active involvement in the Nordic art scene. Alongside established names, the galleries also present a new generation of artists which is beginning to be seen in exhibitions both in the Nordics and internationally. CHART in Tivoli opens for a wide audience to experience contemporary art at the charming amusement park for a whole month, from the end of August to September. On view at CHART 2023 will be artists whose work spans a wide spectrum from painting and sculpture, to films and performances, which reflects the art scene both in the Nordics and internationally. A highlight of the art fair is the new wave of female gallerists from all over the Nordics. In addition, the CHART Book Fair and the tradition of a generous public programme of performances and artists in Charlottenborg's courtyards return, free and open to everyone between August 25 – 27. CHART 2022.

A Cross-Disciplinary Event 
CHART has developed into the leading Nordic event for contemporary art that also includes architecture, design, and art books, as well as open public programmes that reach a wide audience. Via the digital editorial platform CHART Journal, they have a continuous presence in the Nordics. With the initiative Start Collecting with CHART and the book fair for art books, opportunities to start collecting and getting involved in the art scene are opening for more people. The tradition of a generous public programme continues with performances and artists in Charlottenborg's courtyards, free and open to all, transforming CHART into a celebration of art in all its forms in the heart of Copenhagen. CHART Book Fair, Talks, CHART in Tivoli and CHART Architecture contribute to the full programme. As a non-profit organisation, CHART emphasises Nordic values such as social awareness, democratic principles, forward-thinking and cooperation. The art fair and the public programme take place at historic Charlottenborg in central Copenhagen, between August 25 – 27 (preview August 24), and CHART in Tivoli is open August 24 – September 24, 2023.

Highlights
During this year's edition, over 100 artists will be on view in Copenhagen. Among them are established international artists such as Catherine Opie (US), Ragnar Kjartansson (IS), Klara Kristalova (CZ/SE) and Fiona Tan (ID), as well as a new generation of artists, including Sandra Mujinga (CD/NO), Giorgio Celin (CO), Cecilia Fiona (DK) and Tora Schultz (DK). 

Must-sees include a solo presentation by i8 (IS) of Ragnar Kjartansson, who is also in a major exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Cecilia Hillström Gallery from Stockholm will exhibit new paintings by Sigrid Sandström (SE), professor at the Helsinki Art Academy, Berlin-based Dorothée Nilsson Gallery shows the artist duo Inka and Niclas (FI/SE), legendary Helsinki gallery Galerie Forsblom shows international artists such as Secundino Hernández (ES) and Ron Gorchov (US), and the Stockholm gallery LOYAL presents 4 Los Angeles artists: Anja Salonen, Emmanuel Louisnord Desir, Hiejin Yoo and Ross Caliendo. 

A unique collaboration between Kunsthal Oslo and KCAC results in a presentation that reaches from Luleå to Addis Ababa, embracing the contemporary reality of the Nordic art scene. The presentation will feature works by Amir Asgharnejad (IR/NO), Marie Cole (NO), Ermias Ekube (ET), Fadlabi (SD/NO), Ali Gallefoss (NO), Melissa Gordon (US/BE), Hussein Salim (SD/ZA), Calle Segelberg (SE/NO), Robel Temesgen (ET) and Lesia Vasylchenko (UA).

The newly established galleries stand out, ISCA Gallery from Oslo with the artist duo Ida Madsen Følling and Markus Stensrud (NO), Saskia Neuman Gallery shows Mark Dion (US) in dialogue with Josef Jägnefält (SE), and Icelandic Þula presents some of the most celebrated female artists from Iceland: Auður Lóa, Anna Maggý and Kristín Morthens, all born in the 1990s. 

A highlight of the art fair is the new wave of female gallerists from all over the Nordics, represented by palace enterprise (DK), Saskia Neuman Gallery (SE), VAN ETTEN (NO), Sharp Projects (DK), Þula (IS), ISCA Gallery (NO) and Cora Hillebrand Galleri (SE), most are newly established or new at CHART. Programme: Performances at Kongens Nytorv and Music Acts
The full programme with performances, talks, music, and DJ sets, is live on the CHART website. For the very first time, CHART’s programme flows out from the courtyards of Charlottenborg to Kongens Nytorv where artists such as Molly Haslund (DK) Francis Patrick Brady (SE), Hannah Toticki (DK) and Mads Lynnerup (DK) engage the public with performances that range from the power of flowers, fictional conversations, participatory practices, work, and social distancing. In addition, a curated series of film screenings, CHART Cinema Programme, are presented in a loop at the cinema in Kunsthal Charlottenborg throughout the weekend.

Music is an integral part of the CHART’s free public programme in the courtyards of Charlottenborg. The line up includes live performances and DJ sets, including Copenhagen stalwarts Christian d’Or (DK) and Kasper Bjørke (DK), DJ Escho (USA), First Hate (DK), Julie Pavon (HN/DK) and Toby Ernest (DK).  

Another much appreciated part of the free public programmes are the talks, ranging from thematic topics such as Art in Public Spaces, Building for the Future, Collecting Artist Books, and on collecting and philanthropy as part of the Start Collecting with CHART initiative. The talks programme gives unique opportunities to listen to artists in conversation about their work with curators from major Nordic and European art institutions. Look out for talks with Ann Lislegaard, Frances Goodman, Giorgio Celin, Klara Kristalova, Leo Park, Lulama Wolf and Ragnar Kjartansson.

Start Collecting with CHART
In today's art market, the discussion of price records often dominates, and the scene's high prices can be a deterrent to a new generation who want to get involved in art collecting. However, it is possible to find quality artwork within a large price range. Start Collecting with CHART is a new initiative in the form of an exhibition in the foyer of Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Each of the participating galleries at CHART is invited to present a work of art by an established artist, priced at a maximum of EUR 2,700 (DKK 20,000). The exhibition, where pricing will be open throughout, will be open to the public, allowing a wide audience to see the possibilities in collecting and supporting the art scene in the Nordics.

Start Collecting with CHART is part of Conscious Collecting, which also includes curated conversations. In addition to transparency around how art is bought, the initiative will also highlight opportunities to support the art scene and collect art, as well as the moral responsibility involved.

CHART in Tivoli – A 3-Year Partnership
CHART has entered a 3-year partnership with Tivoli Gardens following last year's successful collaboration. Every August and September for the next 3 years, Tivoli's visitors will have the opportunity to experience a cultural environment unlike any other in central Copenhagen, as site-specific sculptures, installations, and video works are installed alongside the park's world-famous rides and attractions. The month-long exhibition will be open to all visitors to the iconic amusement park in Copenhagen.

CHART in Tivoli presents a fresh perspective on traditional exhibition formats. By placing artworks in the context of the historic amusement park Tivoli Gardens, the project offers a new opportunity to broaden the audience for contemporary art. Founded in 1843, Tivoli draws millions of visitors every year and is a well-known venue for performative arts, from ballet and theatre to pop and classical music, and continues to be one of Denmark’s most symbolic cultural locations. Through the exhibitions, CHART is proud to inspire new collaborations across Copenhagen's cultural scenes and to expand the format for what an art fair can be. More about CHART in Tivoli here.

CHART Architecture
CHART is excited to announce that five finalist teams have now been selected by the jury for the 2023 edition of CHART Architecture, CHART’s annual architecture competition. A record number of applications were received following an open call during the spring that invited teams of emerging architects to submit proposals for innovative structures to be installed in the courtyards at Charlottenborg during this year’s CHART and the winner will be announced on August 25. Responding to the theme New European Bauhaus, each team has conceptualised an architectural project that foregrounds the three principles of sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion, as well as incorporating elements of universal design (press material here).

Special Projects at CHART 2023 
As part of the expanded programme for this year's art fair are several presentations by artists who are represented by galleries participating at CHART. These special presentations will be exhibited in the foyer and stairways leading up to the fair at Kunsthal Charlottenborg. CHART Book Fair 2023 
For CHART 2023, the Book Fair will return to Charlottenborg for its third edition to showcase the work of leading art book publishers from across the Nordic region. If you are curious about the world of Nordic artist books, this is the perfect place to start your collection.

Look forward to new publications by established international artists like Alex Da Corte and Tal R, as well as prominent emerging artists like Molly Haslund and Anna Stahn, a new in-depth biography of Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard, a curated selection of artist books from East Asia, new photo books from the next generation of Finnish photographers, as well a Deep Reading Room presented by Plethora Magazine in collaboration with Københavns Møbelsnedkeri, where one can take a break and immerse oneself in the world of artist books.
